  • A Barbed broach is an instrument manufactured from round wires, and the smooth surface is notched to form barbs.
  • The barbed broach is an extirpating, NOT an enlarging instrument.
  • ‘Barbs’ on the broach snag the pulp to facilitate removal.
  • The barbed broach must only be used in the straight part of the canal and insertion of the broach should not exceed 2/3rd the length of the canal.

INDICATION:

  • Used to remove pulp tissue during endodontic(root canal) treatment.
  • They are also used to loosen debris in a necrotic canal or to remove paper points or cotton pellets.

Barbed Broaches – removal of pulp tissue

Use the Barbed Broaches to remove pulp tissue when performing a root canal treatment. You introduce the instrument into the canal, rotates 180 degrees to pull out the pulp tissue.

  1. Establish straight-line access to the canal. …
  2. Select the proper size broach. …
  3. Irrigate the orifice with NaOCl to remove bleeding. …
  4. Insert the broach into the orifice. …
  5. In unusually large canals (such as in adolescent anterior teeth), a “Braiding” technique may be used.

  • The barbed broach is formed from a tapered round shaft by lifting up portions of metal of the shaft almost at a right angle to the shaft.
  • These elevated barbs will engage the pulp tissue and remove it from the canal.
  • In its use, the largest size broach which will fit freely – loosely – in the canal is selected.
  • A broach must not engage the canal walls as it is advanced, or the pressure on the barbs will flatten them against the shaft; as the instrument is withdrawn, the barbs will then embed themselves in the walls, making it difficult or impossible to remove the broach.
  • Because the barbs are “nicked” out of the shaft this is an extremely fragile instrument and will break easily if misused. It must fit loosely

To prevent infection, sterilize the product by autoclave and make sure sterilization is completed before using.
2. Choose the most appropriate type for each case and follow the general method.
3. Before using, make sure the instruments outside of oral cavity that there are no deformations, scratches and cracks.
4. If the head of product is thin, long or large, there are possibilities for breaking or twisting. Because of this, be sure to avoid using unreasonable angle and excessive pressure.
5. Wear rubber dam etc. to avoid accidental ingestion and falling.
6. Do not use this instrument for any purposes except for listed applications above.
7. Only for use by dentists.
8. This product should be treated as medical waste when disposed.
9. Dispose the product if damaged or contaminated.
10. After using, wash it with medical cleaning agent and brush, then wash away foreign substances like adherent body fluids and body tissues.
11. Set the product to a stand when cleaned by ultrasonic cleaner to avoid deterioration of cutting part.
12. Use this product with great care to avoid puncturing fingers because of its possession of sharp-edged part.
13. This product has possibility that be corrosive if sunk into NAOCL, EDTA and etc. for a long time.
