Dentsply Protaper Next Rotary Files are rotary endodontic files made of nickel titanium, used in biomechanical preparation of the root canal system. This Protaper Next rotary file system provides various shaping advantages through a variable tapered design on a given file, M-Wire technology and a unique offset mass of rotation. It is a versatile and flexible system capable of handling a majority of root canal treatments, including the complex cases. ProTaper Next Files has been the gold standard in endodontics for many years and has been an effective solution for practitioners. The ProTaper Next file system utilizes increasing and decreasing percentage tapered design on a single file. This aids in minimizing the contact between the file and dentin, which increases the efficiency while decreasing the dangerous taper lock and the screw effect. ProTaper NEXT Dentsply files have swaggering movement of the file and utilize the innovative M-Wire technology for strengthening NiTi.

Unlike the concentric core in ProTaper Universal File system, ProTaper NEXT features an off-center rectangular core. This adds greater strength to the file as it tracks down the canal. Only two points of the rectangular cross section touch the canal wall at one time, as the axis of rotation differs from the center of mass. The M-Wire technology improves the resistance of the file to cyclic fatigue by almost 400%, when compared with other files having same tip diameter, taper and cross section. While increasing the flexibility of the file, the M-Wire technology decreases the potential for broken instruments.

ProTaper NEXT files produce a unique asymmetrical rotary motion. The advantages of the rotary motion and the fact that the file contacts the canal wall at only two points are:

  • Reduced engagement due to the swaggering effect, limiting undesirable taper lock
  • More cross-sectional space for enhanced cutting
  • Allows to cut a bigger envelope of motion

Canal Shaping with ProTaper Next:

  • While using NaOCl, follow the established guidepath with ProTaper Next X1 file till working length.
  • Use ProTaper Next X2 in the same manner
  • Gauge the size of the foramen using a #25 size hand file
  • If the file binds at length, it indicates that the canal is shaped and ready for disinfection
  • If the file is loose at complete working length, continue shaping with X3 file and if necessary X4 and X5 files, gauging after each instrument change with #30, #40 or #50 hand files respectively

Recommendations for use:

  • Use files in a constant rotation at 300 rpm speed with light apical pressure
  • Recommended torque control – 2.- Ncm, however it is adjustable up to 5.2Ncm based on the practitioner’s experience
  • Clean the instrument flutes frequently and check for signs of wear or distortion
  • In very severe curvatures use the files manually in a clockwise continuous motion
  • It is recommended to use ProTaper Next files with a brushing motion away external root concavities, so as to facilitate flute uploading apical file progression.
  • Use files passively the canal until the working length is reached.

ProTaper NEXT Advantages:

  • Progressively percentage tapered design on a single file: The original ProTaper Universal NiTi rotary file system utilizes both an increasing and decreasing percentage tapered design on a single file. This design feature serves to minimize the contact between a file and dentin, which decreases dangerous taper lock and the screw effect, while increasing efficiency. Taking advantage of this mechanical design, ProTaper NEXT also utilizes progressive tapers on a single file.
  • M-Wire technology: Compared to traditional NiTi, research has shown that M-wire technology improves the resistance to cyclic fatigue by almost 400% when comparing files of the same tip diameter, taper and cross-section. The good news is M-wire improves the resistance to cyclic fatigue, decreases the potential for broken instruments, and increases flexibility. Incorporating M-Wire into the mechanical design of ProTaper NEXT represents a strategic improvement to the ProTaper brand of files.
  • Offset mass of rotation: PTN files produce a unique asymmetrical rotary motion and, at any given cross-section, the file only contacts the wall at 2 points. Clinically, this provides 3 significant advantages: (1) Reduced engagement due to the swaggering effect which limits undesirable taper lock; (2) Affords more cross-sectional space for enhanced cutting, loading, and augering debris; and (3) Allows any PTN file to cut a bigger envelope of motion compared to a similarly-sized file with a symmetrical mass and axis of rotation. This means a smaller-sized and more flexible PTN file can cut the same-size preparation as a larger and stiffer file with a centered mass and axis of rotation.
  • Use ProTaper Next files in any region of a canal that has a confirmed and reproducible glide path. Recommended speed is 300RPM with a torque from 4-5.2Ncm. Use a deliberate brushing motion, away from external root concavities, to facilitate file progression. The ProTaper NEXT sequence is always the same regardless of the length, diameter or curvature of the canal. For the step-by-step technique, download our ProTaper NEXT Technique Card
