These are the usual materials used in a 3 ply face mask:

First Layer:

A Blue Non-woven Fabric which is PP material cut into 170 to 175 MM for adults. It has a density of 18 to 25 GSM. Usually the color is blue.

Second Layer:

The second layer uses a filtering material made of melt-blown fabric. It is 25 GSM thickness material normally with single / double layering of 170 to 175 MM for adults.

Third Layer:

The third layer is a white non-woven fabric material with 190 to 195 MM for adults with a density of 18 to 25 GSM.

Modern 3 ply surgical masks are made from non-woven material and should be discarded after each use. The three-ply material is made up from a melt-blown material placed between non-woven fabric. The melt-blown material acts as the filter that stops microbes from entering or exiting the mask. Most surgical masks feature pleats or folds.

The outer layer of the 3 ply mask is a hydrophobic layer that can repel water, blood and body fluids, the middle filter layer is designed to filter bacteria and it’s said to be the most important layer that also filters out the water droplets and lastly, an inner hydroponic layer which can absorb water, sweat and spit.
